Even as the shift to email, digitized images, and social media has resulted in its withdrawal from many aspects of daily life, paper still thrives as the site of notes, lists, price tags, reminders, sketches, and ads—easily discarded yet ever at hand. Building on collage and other modern forerunners, contemporary artists have shown that when paper moves into sculpture, the results can be dramatic as well as contemplative, humorous as well as critical. This publication explores the history of paper as a sculptural material as well as the work of five artists included in the Nasher Sculpture Center exhibition Paper into Sculpture—Noriko Ambe, Marco Maggi, Joshua Neustein, Nancy Rubins, and Franz West— who play on tensions between commonly held understandings of sculpture and what paper, pushed to its physical limits, can and cannot do. Beautifully designed and printed on an array of different papers and with an essay by Nasher Curator Catherine Craft, Paper into Sculpture offers a timely consideration of an enduring material.
